What is négrette, the grape of Fronton?
Négrette, also known as Pinot Saint Georges, is the signature grape of the Fronton appellation, and it is grown almost nowhere else in the world. It gives the wines of Château Saint Louis their aromas of violet, red fruit and black fruit, and the suppleness on the palate that sets them apart from South-West reds made from other varieties. At the estate it makes up 65 to 100% of our red cuvées depending on the blend: on its own in Naturellement Négrette 2022 and Libéré du Soufre, 85% in Esprit Gaulois and 65% in Tradition, completed there with syrah, cabernet franc and gamay. Our vines are 25 to 35 years old on average and grow on boulbène and silty sand soils over a clay layer: the terroir this demanding grape needs.
